Article Writing - Write Like You Talk When Writing Conversational Articles

Posted on March 23, 2008

Conversational articles share your heart. Academic articles share your knowledge.

When writing academically, I want to write my best so I use my dictionary, thesaurus, and other writing aids. It’s similar to when I have a formal function to attend. I dress up. To ensure that I have the jiggles under control, I wear a girdle. My girdle serves the same purpose as my writing aids–to keep things tight and right.

No girdles are necessary for daily living. Neither are dictionaries, thesauruses, or writing aid because you’re just being you. That’s the same as when you’re talking to others, you’re focused on sharing your thoughts. If you make a grammatical error and catch it, you correct it and keep going.

When writing articles, do the same thing. Focus on sharing your thoughts. To do that effectively, just write like you talk. When you find errors, correct them.

Do your friends understand you when you speak? Then they will understand the words you write. In fact, they will probably be thrilled that you took the time to send them a personal handwritten note.

Look at the response you get from e-mails to friends, especially when sharing your heart. Your e-mails are conversational. You are expressing your thoughts using basic grammar and punctuation skills. Has anyone ever complained that your e-mails are hard to read? Probably not. Your friends are probably more interested in what you’re saying than how you’re saying it.

Conversational writing is not meant to impress others with your knowledge or to showcase the big words you know. Simply put, conversational writing is speaking from your heart to the hearts of your readers in a way they understand.

Another definition of conversational writing is expressing yourself on paper in a way that the average reader understands, acknowledges, and responds to in a positive manner. You make points in a way that your readers understand. You are happy and they are happy.

Writing conversational articles is natural, especially when you’re sharing your passion. Try writing conversationally for your next article.
