When I wrote my first book, Email Episodes I knew very little about the writing industry and even less about publishing. My experience with self-publishing was a great learning opportunity and I gained knowledge that I now share with others. My second book. More Than Meets the Eye: True Stories about Death, Dying, and Afterlife, was published by Booksurge—a POD company that I would not recommend anyone using. The print quality is poor, getting customer service is like pulling teeth and each revision of my manuscript cost $50. It took a friend of mine almost a year to get a printable version of her manuscript into book form and available through Amazon.com. We both found that getting a vanity published book into a bricks and mortar bookstore was nearly impossible. Needless to say, we learned a lot from our experience.

Write A Book on What You Know to Get the Recognition You Deserve
By Joan Clout-Kruse
I had the honor of attending the First World Women’s Forum 2007 in Seoul, Korea recently thanks to one of my clients who invited me to go with her. Women from all around the world came to this event to learn from others and speakers came to present their unique ideas.

A book publisher is a group or person who is responsible for bringing the book to the public for reading purposes. The book publisher is involved in the major steps of developing, marketing, producing, printing, and distributing the book. The book publisher negotiates with authors over intellectual property rights, rights to distribute, and rights to change the book. The publisher also offers the author a bonus, royalties, or a percentage of sales. See self-publishing-steps.com for the steps required to publish a book yourself.

After we’d finished publishing my memoir, Henry’ Daughter, Linda Radke at Five Star Publications, Inc. told me I needed to help promote it—she calls it “pitching it”. I told her I would try but inwardly I had a lot of misgivings. Selling isn’t my thing. I couldn’t picture myself going around saying, “I wrote a good book and I want you to buy it.”
On the other hand, I spent a lot of time and effort on this thing. Because I’m 87 years old, I’ve had the time to experience all kinds of excitement. In fact, almost anything you mention, I’ve been there, done that.

Recently USA Today and ABC News did a weeklong series of stories on family members as caretakers of their elderly relatives. It hit on many levels. It involved a huge chunk of the population: baby boomers. It involved commonality: more and more people are taking on the caretaker role. And of course it involved money: the costs both in time and dollars being expended, they reported, was a good chunk of change. I immediately contacted one of my Inner Circle Workshop students, who is working on a book about the care of Alzheimer’s patients: now is the perfect time for her to send out press releases to get attention for her upcoming book. I know other authors with similar subject matter would do the same–if they were on top of their game.

If you’re trying to interest a publisher in your nonfiction book, you know that it takes a lot of effort, skill and creativity to stand out from the crowd. Publishers receive thousands of proposals each year and publish only a handful. It’s essential that yours catch their attention immediately. Follow these steps to write a proposal that will get noticed by publishers:
1. Title and Subtitle: Check out the books on the current bestseller lists. Most of them have unusual – sometimes outrageous – titles. Think of a title that’s really going to capture the imagination. And make sure your subtitle accurately summarizes what’s in the book.

For authors and publishers, competing in the modern marketplace is a challenge, to say the least. The creative and industrious human mind is generating thousands of products everyday, and for any particular work to rise up above the masses, a clever approach to online advertising is a must. While the Internet has leveled the playing field for many self-publishers, only the savviest of players are generating any profits.
