For centuries, writers have done more or less the same thing: sold their work to publishers who printed and distributed it. The Internet has changed all that. Instead of depending on publishers to take the risk and reap the reward of publication, writers can publish their own work online. This is different than being a “content provider,” an underpaid writer who furnishes verbiage to existing sites. This is being an entrepreneur. The writer becomes the publisher. It’s not only possible today, it’s already happening.

I recently wrote an article, Writing Naturally wherein someone commented that they liked the article for fiction, but how could one apply these same techniques to nonfiction.
Creative nonfiction is a compilation of facts about a particular subject or event and may include interviews and more than one side or viewpoint of the subject or event. The writing down of facts can be particularly boring. You surely cannot input your personal opinion into this type of piece if you’re not writing an op-ed piece. So how to you keep you readers involved and moving through the story?

Chances are, if you are checking out this web site, you are an author with an inkling that you might require editorial assistance. Of course, in the world of legendary editor Maxwell Perkins and novelist William Faulkner—or for that matter the world of Carole Baron and Judith Krantz, or many other contemporary editors and the authors they have worked with—it’s understood that every author needs an editor, just as every actor needs a director. Traditionally, the editor was provided by the publisher. But this is no longer the case. Editors who work for publishing houses have had their job descriptions changed over the past decade. Their mission now is generally to acquire books and help package and market them—not to edit them.

Often when we get blocked it is because we need to write on a particular subject or for a particular assignment, and we may be feeling stressed about doing a good job. Try writing about anything else continuously for ten minutes or longer. Write something you plan to throw away or delete. This will get you started at writing, and you can gradually begin writing about your intended subject or assignment.

Writing an E-zine is more than just a pretty packaging for words. Those words are the meat of your E-zine and your message. Over a century and a half ago, Elizabeth Barrett Browning penned:
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
